That's what we called her: Lulu.
And that was our big mistake.
Actually, there was no reason for us to go along with Lulu. As a matter of fact, it probably would have been a good deal better if we hadn't. She could have done the planet-checking without any supervision. But there were rules which said a robot of her class must be attended by no fewer than three humans. And, naturally, there was some prejudice against turning loose, all by itself, a robot that had taken almost twenty years to build and had cost ten billion dollars.}}

I love you," Lulu repeated obstinately, "and we are eloping."

"Where'd she get that eloping stuff?" asked Ben.
"It's the junk they filled her up with back on Earth," I said.
"When I get back," said Ben, "I'm going to hunt up the jerk who picked out those novels and jam them down his throat and then mop up the place with him."}}

{{Q|Цитата=— А я как была, так и осталась машиной, — сказала Прелесть. — {{comment|Элмер|робот}} мне ближе, чем вы. Вам, людям, и в голову не приходит, что не у одних людей могут быть свои понятия. Тебя ужасает, что Элмер хотел добыть фосфат из ваших костей, но, если бы в Элмере был металл, который вам нужен, вы бы разломали его, не задумываясь. Вам бы и в голову не пришло, что это несправедливость. Если бы Элмер возражал, вы бы подумали, что он дурака валяет. Все такие — и вы, и весь ваш род. Хватит с меня. Я добилась своего. Мне здесь хорошо. Я полюбила на всю жизнь. И иронизируйте себе сколько угодно, мне наплевать на вас.|Оригинал="Still I'm a machine," said Lulu, "and I am closer to Elmer than I am to you. You humans can't get it through your heads that there might be a legitimate set of non-human values. You are horrified that Elmer wanted the phosphate in your bones, but if there were a metal in Elmer that you needed, you'd break him up to get it without a second thought. You wouldn't even consider that you might be wrong. You'd think it an imposition if Elmer should object. That's the trouble with you and your human race. I've had enough. I have what I want. I am content to stay here. I've found the great love of my life. And for all I care, your pals and you can rot."}}

So she jilted us," said Ben.

"No worse than we did to her," Jimmy reminded him.
"But what did she expect? A man can't love a robot."
"Lulu's crazy," Ben declared.}}

{{Q|Цитата=Ведь во всех нас сидит этакое нежелание признавать, что наш путь развития необязательно лучший, что точке зрения человека, может и не быть эталоном, к которому в конце концов придут все другие формы жизни.|Оригинал=For in us all, I knew, lingered that reluctance to recognize that our way was not necessarily best, that the human viewpoint might not be the universal viewpoint to which all other life must eventually conform.}}

Это всё равно что говорить о великом произведении живописи, будто оно квадратное, плоское и синеватое, а местами зелёное и красное.|Оригинал=Ben and Jimmy came back in the afternoon and their eyes were shining with excitement. They spread out a blanket and emptied their pockets of the most incredible things any man has ever laid eyes on.

Don't expect me to describe that stuff. There's no point in trying to. What is the sense of saying that a certain item was like a metal chain and that it was yellow? There is no way to get across the feel of it as it slid through one's fingers or the tinkle of it as it moved or the blazing color that was a sort of living yellow. It is very much like saying that a famous painting is square and flat and blue, with some green and red.}}

{{Q|Цитата=— Послушай, — сказал я, — чего ты хочешь — вскрыть Прелесть или взорвать еееё ко всем чертям? Ничего ты не поделаешь. Прелесть — робот самостоятельный, или ты забыл? Проверти в ней дырку, и она заделает еееё. Будешь слишком долго болтаться возле нее, она вырастит дубинку и тяпнет тебя по башке.|Оригинал="Look," I said, "what do you want to do—open Lulu up or blow her to bits? Anyhow, I don't think you can do a thing about it. Lulu is a self-maintaining robot, or have you forgotten? Bore a hole in her and she'll grow it shut. Go monkeying around too much and she'll grow a club and clout you on the head."}}

{{Q|Цитата=На второй день мы нашли штуковину, которая очень пригодилась для открывания консервных банок, но я совершенно не уверен, что создавали еееё именно для этого. А ещеещё на следующий день мы наконец разгадали, что один из инструментов можно использовать для рытья семиугольных ямок, и я спрашиваю, кто это в здравом уме захочет рыть семиугольные ямки?|Оригинал=On the second day, we found a dojigger that was just fine for opening cans, although I'm fairly sure that was not at all what it was designed for. And on the following day, we finally puzzled out how another piece of equipment could be used for digging slanted postholes and, I ask you, who in their right mind would be wanting slanted postholes?}}

Такого бреда он даже прежде не писал!|Оригинал=Jimmy had not gone out with us a single day. He'd sit hunched over his ream of paper and he scribbled and revised and crossed out words and put in others. He'd get up and walk around in circles or pace back and forth and mumble to himself, then go back and write some more. He scarcely ate and he wouldn't talk and he only slept a little. He was the very portrait of a Young Man in the Throes of Creation.

I got curious about it, wondering if, with all this agony and sweat, he might be at last writing something that was worth the effort. So, when he wasn't looking, I sneaked out a page of it.
It was even worse than the goo he had written before.}}
