The references to atomics in the story are nonsense from beginning to end; so are those to strategy and tactics; even the multiplication is wrong; and yet van Vogt’s single-minded power maniacs exert their usual fascination. You can at least be sure that a van Vogt character will never break down into sentimental altruism at a crucial moment; his villains are thoroughgoing bastards, and so are his heroes.
